Mount Warning Preschool is set to undergo a green transformation

Green scene: Students from Mount Warning Preschool prepare for their new playhouse
With the aim of educating children in sustainable living through play, the preschool is demolishing its current cubby house and rebuilding it using recycled materials. Mount Warning Preschool director Pauline Hurcombe said the cubby house would be demolished this Sunday.
“We are leaving the floor, but everything else is going, and it will be re-built from recycled tin and recycled wood. We’ve explained to the kids the good and the sad news of what is going to happen,” Ms Hurcombe said.
“The new cubby will also have swing-powered lights, so as the kids swing it will power the light to stay on.” The old cubby has served the preschool for the past 20 years, and past students, families and community members are invited to attend the demolition day.
The demolition will become quite an event, running from 10am to 3pm, with a sausage sizzle and vegetarian food available. Ms Hurcombe said a number of sustainability lessons were taught to the students through the Greening Our Playground program.
“It’s all about recycling, reusing and reducing. “We have a worm farm and the kids pump the water into the playground. They are all very interested in it,” Ms Hurcombe said.
To further the conservation education at the preschool, local stone artisans Simon Cripps and Peter Owen have created water features and a castle waterfall
